Nigeria 2007 -Two Brothers To Contest.
Qasim Akinreti, Lagos 19th-12- 06
Fate has brought two Presidential candidates from the same state, geo political zone, and religion, together to contest election in 2007 in Nigeria.
Alhaji Umar Yar’Dua, present Governor of Katsina state, was elected at a Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, National Convention to run for the Presidency, while former Nigeria’s head of state General Muhammad Buhari will fly the flag of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP at the 2007 polls.
The Common Bond
Buhari and Yar’ Adua, are both from the aristocratic family in Katsina, in North West Nigeria where the predominant religion is Islam. Integrity, good tract record in governance and common good were said to be some of the attributes of the two leaders which endeared people to support their aspirations for the Presidency.
At the National convention of both political parties, the duo of Yar’ Adua and Buhari were literally emerged as consensus candidates and arguably the best candidates the North can produce for the coming elections. This was accentuated by the level of support by other notable big names in the presidential race across Nigeria, in the ruling and the opposition parties.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Retired General Buhari, former Head of State has contested for the 2003 Presidential election with the incumbent President Olusegun Obasanjo. Though he lost, political analyst believed he fought gallantly. Ever since, then he as remained focused re-contesting the election and obviously must have gained some experiences on presidential campaigns and political calculations. For him, this seems a familiar terrain.
Recently, the ANPP and Action Congress, AC, signed a political accord to recently to garner votes in their areas of political strength arguably in the North and Southwest of the country. The battle ground could well be in the Southeast and South south of the country.
However, with choice of the Yar Adua ‘s running mates , Jonathan Goodluck from the Niger Delta area ,wresting power from the ruling party, the PDP, could well be an uphill task.
And for Yar’ Adua, the power of incumbency from the ruling party is a great advantage to the young man whose profile has risen in recent days as the heir apparent.
By this mandate of the PDP, Yar’ Adua has inherited the political machine, of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, set up by his late brother, Musa Yar’ Adua, a former second in command to Obasanjo in 1979. PDM is the dominant group within the ruling party.
In terms of integrity, Yar ‘Adua stand tall. His record of achievements in Katsina is an added advantage.
Be that as it may, Yar’ Adua’s clout is no match to Buhari. To some political analysts, he might be a reluctant President who may be teleguided by President Obasanjo biddings.
